Fake Security Camera
Installing a fake security camera can help a business or retail store to deter thieves from stealing from them, since they can often find another location where there is no video surveillance whatsoever. If you cannot afford a working security camera system, then a few fake security cameras may just do the trick for you.
Unfortunately for homeowners, having a fake security camera is not as effective as it is for a business. If you want to prevent thieves from breaking in to your home, then you may be better off with a home alarm system with monitoring. If your home is broken into, seeing a camera, fake or real, will probably result in the thieves just putting on face masks, or perhaps spray painting the lens of the camera, effectively disabling it.
Since ccd security cameras are meant to record activities to assist the authorities in catching theives or trespassers, having a fake security camera will obviously not help at all. You may want to consider purchasing a real security camera system, or look into monitoring by a security company.
If you do want to purchase a fake security camara there are a mulititude of options to choose from. Here’s a quick survey, to help you discover what will be right for you.
Dummy Outdoor Security Cameras
There are a wide varitety of dummy outdoor security cameras available, all at reasonable prices (from $20.00 to $90.00). You can find larger dummy outdoor cameras, made using real CCTV camera housing and including a flashing LED light to indicate the “camera” is active, with a camera lens behind the glass front, cable and mounting brackets. Obviously the LED requires batteries for operation. This type of camera is more expensive, costing upwards of $90.00, however, it gives a high degree of realism to your security “system.”
Less expensive outdoor camera fakes also can be found that have a flashing LED, aluminum housing, video cable and adjustable mounting brackets. These can be found in the $40.00 price range.
Lowest priced fake outdoor cameras can be found for as little as $20.00, there are generally an empty camera housing with simple mounting bracket and a flashing LED.
There are also fake dome security cameras, discussed below.
Fake Dome Security Cameras
Dome cameras look just like a real ccd security camera, and are easy to install in many places. These are available with or without a flashing LED, and can be found for as little as $13.00, or as expensive as $80.00.
The most expensive Dome security cameras are for outdoor use, come with mounting brackets and blinking LEDs (to attract attention) and are built from real camera housings (just without the internal electronics). These are great for coverage of large areas such as a parking lot or industrial area.
Less expensive fake dome cameras are made for indoor use and can be mounted easily on any flat surface, and there are some that are built into a ceiling tile. There are also varieties that look like they have built-in Infrared LEDs, to imitate a CCD night vision camera, for a fraction of the cost of a real one.
Simulated Indoor Security Cameras
These types of dummy cameras appear to be your standard indoor surveillance camera, with lens, flashing light, video cable or “antenna” (for fake wireless appearance) and mounting brackets. Cost of these is quite modest, ranging from $15.00 to $30.00
Wrapping Things Up
When you are considering a fake security camera, think about how effective it needs to be for your circumstances. If you are willing to forgoe the actual recording of activities on your property, and believe that the deterrence alone will be enough to give you the security you desire, then by all means invest in a fake camera. If you conclude that you really want to observe activites, and record them, you will be better off investing in a system that does give you the ability to record and observe. This may be more expensive up front, but may help you save a lot in the long term.
